About the Director of Mathematics: The Director of Mathematics (DOM) is the regional instructional leader of KIPP Colorado in the area of mathematics. The Director of Mathematics will serve as a content expert and a strong implementer of a rigorous and aligned PK-12 mathematics vision through building collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders. This person will work closely with KIPP Principals, school-based Math Instructional Leaders, and Math Department Chairs at all schools to ensure our growing network of schools maintains vertical and horizontal curricular alignment for rigorous, college-ready mathematics instruction. The DOM serves as the main mathematics contact between KIPP Colorado and the national KIPP network, as well as among individual schools within the region. This is a full-time position and will report directly to the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning.

Role Responsibilities and More About How You’ll Spend Your Time in this Role

Professional Responsibilities 

  • Believe deeply in the mission, values, and Race, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (RIDE) commitments of KIPP Colorado Schools and that all children can and will learn 
  • Assume personal responsibility for student achievement 
  • Read, internalize, and adhere to the KIPP Colorado Policies and Procedures manual and guidelines
  • Provide an active presence, strategic supervision, and intentional monitoring to ensure student safety and engagement in rigorous learning (regardless of my role and its proximity to students)
  • Take ownership for the development of your craft and engage actively in coaching sessions (meet 1-2 times every 1 or 2 weeks (depending on need and role) with a manager, receive coaching, implement all provided feedback, engage in active practice, etc.)
  • Commit to being prepared. Such as: internalizing and preparing for lessons, preparing for O3s/coaching, preparing for meetings, coaching, PD, reading and internalizing written communication, etc. 
  • Meet professional obligations including and not limited to meeting deadlines and honoring schedules 
  • Consistently leverage existing professional tools, including but not limited to Google Suite (google documents, etc.) and Microsoft Suite (including but not limited to your KIPP Colorado email, Teams chat / meetings, Teams phone, and Microsoft Outlook calendar) 
  • Maintain strong attendance each day and be on time to all responsibilities
  • Collaborate with colleagues and seek feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement 
  • Reflect on professional practices to meet individual professional development goals 
  • Actively participate in professional development, grade level, and department meetings
  • Actively engage and implement in all school-wide and org-wide professional development
  • Serve as a positive, contributing member of a grade team or functional team, collaborating with colleagues to tackle common challenges and implement org and grade-wide initiatives
  • Share candid, solutions-oriented feedback with peers and leadership on a regular basis, assuring that feedback is shared directly with the intended recipient. Ensure that feedback is focused on improving outcomes and experiences for students
  • Assist with both student and staff recruitment and engagement- including events, home visits, calls home, and other determined and related requirements
  • Know that your role, professional development, org wide meetings, etc. may require you to travel around Denver to other KIPP Campuses, our Home Office, or other KIPP or PD events 
  • Assist with other duties as assigned (such as but not limited to, lunch duty, arrival/dismissal duty, bathroom duty, hallway duty, school support duties, etc.) 
 

Design and Deliver Responsive Curriculum & Assessments in Mathematics 

  • Develop mathematics program (curriculum, assessment, implementation support) that upholds our vision for mathematics instruction and long-term learning at KIPP Colorado, and aligns with the KIPP Foundation’s One KIPP initiative
  • Review, revise, or develop rigorous interim and curriculum-based unit assessments that align to the grade level expectations for each grade and the content of our prioritized year-end assessments 
  • Develop (and modify as needed) the scope and sequence of lessons across your grade band 
  • Prepare module overviews and guidance for internalization for each unit of study 
  • Monitor the implementation of the curriculum, and make and communicate changes and improvements to content as needed 
  • Review and respond to assessment data by making adjustments and modifications to the mathematics curriculum and/or by deploying coaching support to places most in need 
  • Review, revise, or develop expectations and protocols for superior intellectual prep with our normed curricula and the other aspects of our mathematics program and approach
  • Monitor and support teacher internalization and implementation of existent math curricula and blended learning programs
  • Review and revise interim and curriculum-based unit assessments to ensure they align to the rigor and content of our prioritized year-end assessments 
 

Coach and Support the Implementation of the Academic Program

  • Support our schools to get extraordinary results in mathematics proficiency by engaging in coaching & strategy sessions with each school in the region 
  • By working with instructional leaders in each school, build our school-based leaders’ content knowledge and instructional leadership capacity -- this may include engaging in walk-throughs, student work analysis protocols, coaching one on ones, leading and monitoring content meetings, supporting PD implementation, and more 
  • Analyze data and student work from major assessments with instructional leaders at each school and make recommendations about responding to misconceptions and implementing instructional next steps 
  • Serve as a point person for all things programmatic, operational, data-related, and logistical – from assessment questions to materials management – related to math curriculum

Lead and Engage in Professional Development

  • Facilitate sharing of mathematics resources and coordinate professional development and curriculum internalization processes for all KIPP Colorado staff members
  • Develop and lead regional mathematics professional development 
  • Provide support to school leadership to coach and develop math instructional staff
  • Plan and implement effective summer and ongoing professional development for math teachers
  • Monitor and hold schools accountable to the implementation of codified network-wide consistent practices related to mathematics education for PK-12 students
  • Provide mathematics intervention expertise and continuously improve existent math intervention programming
  • Assist the Academic Team in monitoring and supporting the effectiveness of all instructional programs

Data Analysis and Action 

  • Team with math instructional leaders to monitor student achievement and provide training, support, resources, and tools to ensure teachers are supporting students successfully
  • Collaborate with the regional data team to ensure data is easily accessible to all school teams
  • Use data systems to organize and analyze data used to inform decision-making, program modification and planning for targeted, small group instruction
  • Provide professional development regularly with math instructional staff to increase their knowledge and use of data, as well as to discuss data trends to inform program implementation, modification and planning for small group instruction and math intervention
  • Collaborate with the Academic Team and school instructional leaders on successful approaches to regional Data Days and responding to data from interim assessments

Team Leadership, Support, and Collaboration 

  • Participate as a member of the Home Office Team and the Academics Team
  • Support individual schools, as needed, by serving as an interim Assistant Principal for part of your work week to cover vacancies and leaves of absence 
  • Other duties or projects as assigned by the Managing Director of Teaching and Learning

About the skills and qualifications you will bring to this role: 

  • Bachelor's degree (required)
  • At least 5-7 years of relevant and aligned experience in school or non-profit based Mathematics or Instructional Leadership( required)
  • At least 5 years of school based experience and/or a strong record of helping underserved students achieve academic success (required) 
  • At least 4 years of successful classroom teaching experience as a lead teacher (required)
  • Past experience (2 years) of leading adults in a school environment (required) 
  • A full understanding and Commitment to an Exceptional Student Experience (more about that HERE) (required) 
  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive Market Salary: Starting salary for this role begins at $91,800 and is commensurate with experience
